malaysia Starbucks~

Malaysia's "kopitiam" revival serves up competition for Starbucks
Move over Starbucks. Traditional Malaysian "kopitiam" are making a comeback, serving cups of local-style brew and traditional fare as Malaysians discover a taste for nostalgia.

Kopitiam -- the word means "coffee shop" in the Hokkien dialect of ethnic Chinese in Malaysia -- were originally found in shophouses in villages and towns across the country, serving up coffee and breakfast.

Usually crowded, noisy and rather grimy, they were popular places to grab a quick drink and cheap street food.
Modern kopitiams have retained the old-fashioned marble-topped tables, wooden chairs and chunky crockery, but now they are to be found in the cavernous air-conditioned shopping malls of the capital Kuala Lumpur.

And with their thick brewed "kopi," they are holding their own against the cappuccinos and macchiatos offered by foreign coffee chains that exploded onto the Malaysian scene in the late nineties.

City-dwellers are rediscovering kopitiam fare such as soft-boiled eggs eaten with soya sauce and a dash of pepper, and bread toasted over a charcoal fire and slathered with salted butter and kaya, a rich coconut and egg jam.

AirAsia X plans to fly to Britain in 2008

AirAsia X plans to fly to Britain in 2008

Malaysia's long-haul budget carrier AirAsia X said Thursday it plans to launch flights to Britain in the fourth quarter of 2008 after acquring four additional Airbus aircraft.

"We will be acquiring four more jets in the second half of next year. Two will be A330-300 and two will be A340-300," AirAsia X chief executive Azran Osman-Rani told AFP.

Azran said the two new A330-300 were among 15 they have ordered from Airbus while the A340-300 to be used on the European route would be leased.

The carrier will mount flights either to London or Mancester using the A340 aircraft, he said.

"We will fly to the United Kingdom in fourth quarter of next year. But we have not decided if we will fly to London or Mancester," Azran said.

AirAsia X will operate its maiden flight to Australia's Gold Coast on Friday, using a leased A330, and is eying China as its second destination.

"We are thrilled to serve the Gold Coast route," Azran said, adding that the flight was "close to 96 percent full."

Azran said AirAsia X fares will be 50 percent cheaper than normal full-service carriers.

National carrier Malaysia Airlines charges 2,786 ringgit (836 dollars) for a return flight between Kuala Lumpur and Brisbane, the capital of Australia's Queensland state which lies just north of the Gold Coast.

AirAsia X eyes second Australian destination

Malaysia's long-haul budget carrier AirAsia X is planning to expand its Australian operations with a second destination after launching its maiden flight to the Gold Coast, reports said Sunday.

Chief executive officer Azran Osman-Rani told the New Straits Times that the carrier had begun negotiations with several cities including Newcastle in New South Wales and Avalon in Victoria.

"We are keen on Avalon as it is an open airport without any congestion. It will also be cheaper for us to land there," he told the daily from the Gold Coast where the inaugural flight from Kuala Lumpur landed on Friday.

Newcastle is within striking distance of Sydney and Avalon is near Melbourne.
Azran said the second Australian destination would be added after AirAsia X -- currently operating with a leased Airbus A330 -- takes delivery of a fleet of 15 aircraft next September.
AirAsia X said last week it plans to launch flights to Britain in the fourth quarter of 2008, with London and Manchester being considered. It is also eyeing China as it expands its network.

Azran said that besides those countries, the carrier was planning to introduce routes in the Middle East, north Asia, India, Korea and Japan and central or eastern Europe within the next five years.
"We are also looking at Amritsar in India and maybe open up a new market in central or eastern Europe, like Prague or Moscow, he told the New Straits Times.

Malaysian ferris wheel off to bad start as power cut traps dozens

The launch of a giant ferris wheel in Malaysia's tourist town of Malacca went sour when a power cut trapped dozens of people on the inaugural ride, reports said Sunday.

Some 50 passengers including tearful children and an eight-month-pregnant woman were stuck 25 metres above the ground in the pitch dark Saturday until rescuers managed to bring the gondolas down manually half an hour later.

The New Straits Times said the incident happened just as Malacca's state governor and chief minister arrived for their turn on the new 3.3 million ringgit (900,000 dollar) tourist attraction built on the banks of the Malacca River.

"I was shaken. This is a sign of poor safety features. I feel the ferris wheel is not ready for operations yet," Ibrahim Mohamed, whose daughter and grandchildren were trapped on the ride, told the daily.

Malays 'not stupid or weak' and must become competitive: PM

Malaysia's majority ethnic group, the Muslim Malays, are not "stupid or weak" and should stop being fearful and learn to live without government handouts, the prime minister reportedly said Sunday.

"The feeling of being scared and apprehensive has dominated the thinking of the Malays for far too long... we are still scared even after 50 years of independence," Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said.

Abdullah said in an interview reported by the official Bernama news agency that Malays must not continue to rely on a four-decade-old system of positive discrimination which entitles them to a range of benefits.

"They must learn to stand on their own feet and learn to be competitive. We will help the Malays who are serious in wanting to do business and want to work hard," he said.
"I've said many times Malays are not stupid or weak," he added.

Abdullah said it would take a long process to change the mindset of Malays, who make up 60 percent of the population but lag far behind the ethnic Chinese community which dominates the business sector.

"I want the Malays to capitalise on the opportunities given to them," he said. "There are no easy ways to succeed in life. Only the educated, knowledgeable and the hard-working will succeed eventually."

The prime minister's salvo comes ahead of the ruling United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) party congress this week which is expected to tackle the issue of the positive discrimination policies that are criticised as ineffective.

Government data released in 2004 showed that 8.3 percent of Malays were still living in poverty -- earning less than 190 dollars a month -- compared to just 0.6 percent of Chinese and 2.9 percent of Indians.

After racially charged speeches at last year's assembly caused dismay among Malaysia's ethnic Chinese and Indians, Abdullah said the party must show this time that it was intent on benefiting all Malaysians.
