AirAsia X plans to fly to Britain in 2008

Malaysia's long-haul budget carrier AirAsia X said Thursday it plans to launch flights to Britain in the fourth quarter of 2008 after acquring four additional Airbus aircraft.

"We will be acquiring four more jets in the second half of next year. Two will be A330-300 and two will be A340-300," AirAsia X chief executive Azran Osman-Rani told AFP.

Azran said the two new A330-300 were among 15 they have ordered from Airbus while the A340-300 to be used on the European route would be leased.

The carrier will mount flights either to London or Mancester using the A340 aircraft, he said.

"We will fly to the United Kingdom in fourth quarter of next year. But we have not decided if we will fly to London or Mancester," Azran said.

AirAsia X will operate its maiden flight to Australia's Gold Coast on Friday, using a leased A330, and is eying China as its second destination.

"We are thrilled to serve the Gold Coast route," Azran said, adding that the flight was "close to 96 percent full."

Azran said AirAsia X fares will be 50 percent cheaper than normal full-service carriers.

National carrier Malaysia Airlines charges 2,786 ringgit (836 dollars) for a return flight between Kuala Lumpur and Brisbane, the capital of Australia's Queensland state which lies just north of the Gold Coast.
